stearing rack

any tip for removing & replaceing a rack on 400 sdi, looked in haynes manual & it seemed a bit drawn out
is there a quicker way

I've not done one on the 400 before but from memory the rack should come out through the drivers side wheel arch, therefore that wheel needs to stay removed.

One tricky bit is removing the track rod ends from the hubs which you need the right tool for or a big hammer!

Why does the rack need changing?

removing rack as fluid leaking from split gater on near side quite a bad leak

Are you losing lots of fluid from the PAS fluid reservoir?

Or is it just oil that has collected in the steering rack boot?

If you aren't losing PAS fluid from the reservoir then chances are you'll only need another boot on the rack.

I've seen plenty of garages tell owners that the rack is duff just because a little oil has leaked out of a split boot.

keeping a eye on the fluid level
top up the other day & seems to be ok so far
