Quiet performance exhaust?

Post by dogsbe »

My car is far too loud for my liking. Actually, it is not that bad, but just scraps buy noise checks on the track by a few db. The issue is bass. I have a wingy de cat and back box that just booms.

My options:

1) return to a standard back box
2) fit a silencer to the middle section
3) fit a cat
4) reduce the power of the car

Anyone have any recommendations?

A few options, but the easiest and most effective will be to install a resonator box in the centre section. However these do increase backpressure but do remove a lot of the low frequencies.

Another slightly more performance orientated option would be to install a centre section which is a large cherry bomb style silencer (i.e. straight-thru but with a perforated tube surrounded by silencer wadding to absorb noise). This will still leave a "raspy" exhaust note but should reduce the noise levels.

Speaking of noise levels remember that the scale for noise is logarithmic, 3dB higher is twice the "volume" of sound.
So if you are 3dB under the noise limit then that is quite a lot under!
