rover 45 cooling system air lock

Post by nicko500s »

any one know how to get air out of the cooling system, rover 45 L series.

the cooling system has been apart due to new engine & rad fitted so the system was dry apart from heater i guess.
my usual method of cap off, heater turned to hot, engine running & squeezing top hose has released some air but after an hour or so only warm air from heater, top hose very hot, fans running, forgot to check bottom hose.
i dont think there are any bleed screws in the hoses? which may of helped.

there is no coolent folowing from the small hose in the top middle of rad to top of header tank,
is there a prefered method for this car?

any help much apreciated.

spent an hour on this again.

top hose hot, bottom hose cold, rad cold, heater set to hot, fans cut in ok.
loads of bubbles from header tank.
temp guage says engine very hot.
heater cold.
bottom hose & rad cold.
turn off engine loads of bubbles, coolent level in header drops alot.
gave up & went to see new rover specialist he says check plastic hose from top of header to top of rad, sure enough blocked solid, when i find a supplier i will replace with normal water hose, i doubt this is the whole cause of this but it could be the reason the engine was overheating in the first place?
suprised this hose would get blocked with just water but who knows what else had been added
thinking about it i added super seal a few times but then it was already overheating then.
i bet i have to change or check the thermostat as well,

seems all ok was header tank to rad hose, replaced with normal water hose rather than try & find original hose.
also check where hose fits to header and rad that they not blocked, on mine the header was partly blocked.
this is what caused the car to over heat all along, never drempt it could be a hose blocked.

Unusual for that pipe to get blocked, but it does happen when there are other issues that have given coolant system problems, (head gasket issues or too much rad-weld etc).
